OCR: MAURICE OLLEY E d Cole's desire to produce the first American-made sports car resulted in him bring- ing chassis expert Maurice Olley to Chevrolet in 1952. "Maurice was Cole's hand-picked chief of Chevy research and develop- ment," said Mclellan. Olley's task was to head a new research and development department that would fashion the first pro- duction Corvette. The depart- ment had full responsibility for the design of the car's chassis, and within days of his arrival at Chevrolet, Olley already had the new Corvette sketched out to perfection. As Olley once modestly stated, "GM produced a sports car using components of known reliability, with adequate perfor- mance and with a comfortable ride." They also made history.
